Santorini Declared in State of Emergency
Earlier on Thursday (February 6), the General Secretariat for Civil Protection declared the municipality of Thira in a state of emergency to address the ongoing crisis and manage the consequences of the recent seismic activity.
Over 7,700 Earthquakes in Nine Days
According to an emergency announcement by the Interdisciplinary Risk and Crisis Management Committee of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), more than 7,700 earthquakes have been detected in the Santorini-Amorgos seismic zone between January 26 and February 4, 2025. The NKUA Seismology Laboratory used machine learning techniques to identify and record these events, with over 6,100 quakes exceeding a magnitude of 1.0.
Increased Landslide Risk
The NKUA report warns that the ongoing seismic activity may lead to intensified landslides, especially if a stronger earthquake occurs. Authorities remain on high alert as seismic tremors continue to affect the region.
