3D Video Captures the Barrage of Earthquakes in Santorini from January 25 to Today – Thira Declared in State of Emergency

Residents of Santorini and Amorgos remain on high alert as seismic activity in the region continues.

The municipality of Thira has been declared in a state of emergency by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection due to the intense seismic activity.

In an emergency announcement, the University of Athens reported that over 7,700 earthquakes have been recorded in the area between Santorini and Amorgos from January 26 to February 4. The report also highlights the significant risk of landslides, particularly in Santorini.

Last night, the strongest tremor in recent days, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, shook the Cyclades.

Today, three earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or higher have been recorded since 4:00 PM. Additionally, a 4.5-magnitude quake struck just before 10:00 AM, with its epicenter in the sea south-southwest of Amorgos. Earlier in the same area, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake had occurred at 7:51 AM.

Since 1:00 AM, a total of 19 tremors above magnitude 4.0 have been recorded, all strongly felt by residents.

Yellow dots represent the recent seismic events from January 25 until now (5 February 2025).

Blue circles represent historic seismic events with a magnitude of less than 6R.

Red dots mark historic seismic events >6 R like the 1956 Amorgos earthquake, one of the most powerful events in the area’s history.

Red lines represent faults with high risk and

Yellow lines represent faults with medium risk.
