Astypalea, a small Greek island with just 1,000 residents, has earned a spot among the world’s top seven hidden gems for 2025.
Renowned travel blogger Pericles Rosa scoured the globe to uncover lesser-known treasures, and amid his journey, he stumbled upon Astypalea. He describes it as follows:
"If you dream of visiting a Greek island untouched by mass tourism and need a place to recharge your batteries, Astypalea is the perfect destination. Known as the ‘Butterfly of the Aegean,’ it blends elements from both the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. The island boasts the most picturesque Chora in all of Greece, with its iconic whitewashed houses, windmills, blue-domed churches, and a majestic castle overlooking the landscape. Pristine beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, rich local cuisine, and charming alleys make Astypalea an unforgettable retreat."
The "Butterfly of the Aegean"
Despite belonging to the Dodecanese, Astypalea bears a striking resemblance to the Cycladic islands. Its historic castle, breathtaking Aegean views, traditional windmills, and dazzling whitewashed buildings create a stunning and well-preserved architectural ensemble.
The island’s main town, Chora—also known as "Astropalia"—is the beating heart of the island, offering the best options for dining and entertainment. At the top of the hill stands Astypalea’s most famous landmark: its imposing medieval castle, built in the 13th century by the Quirini family. Originally constructed to protect against the pirates that once roamed the Aegean, the castle eventually became too small as the population grew, leading to the town expanding down the hillside toward the port of Pera Gialos.
Nestled beneath the castle is the Church of Panagia Portaitissa, one of the most beautiful churches in the Aegean. Founded in 1762 by Saint Anthimos, it stands out with its brilliant white facade, striking bell tower, and silver-domed roof.
A Natural Paradise
Astypalea is a haven of natural beauty, offering landscapes and experiences that make it a truly special place.
Livadi: Known as the island’s "blooming garden," Livadi is filled with citrus orchards and vineyards, with homes surrounded by flowers. It leads to one of the island’s most scenic and well-developed beaches, dotted with charming cafes and restaurants.
Maltezana (Analipsi): Home to the renowned Talara Baths, these ancient Hellenistic mosaics depict the seasons and zodiac symbols and are considered unique in Greece.
Negro’s Cave: A fascinating site near Vatses beach, featuring impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations. Legends speak of pirates hiding their treasures here. Reaching the cave requires a scenic 45-minute hike.
Rock Climbing at Ftera: Just 20 minutes from Chora, this limestone climbing area offers two distinct rock faces and 20 different routes for climbers of varying skill levels.
Since 1999, Astypalea has also hosted its own annual festival, solidifying its reputation as an alternative travel destination.
With its stunning beaches, delicious food, vibrant music, and adventurous spirit, Astypalea remains a hidden paradise—offering a perfect escape for travelers seeking beauty, tranquility, and a taste of authentic Greece.
